The Busy Month of May!

Posted by ankolemission on June 5, 2008

May 2008 went by in a flash!

We said goodbye to two wonderful teammates, Betsy Glover and Desarae Smith, who have been here for the past year teaching the team kids and doing some super ministry with college students. We’re going to miss them greatly. You can read about their adventures at their blogs:

.

Also, the Huttons continue to get settled in to life and ministry very well here. We’re so thrilled to have them! Please check out their website and blog, to hear more from them:http://www.huttonsinafrica.com

.

Finally, we’ll close with some photos: one from one of the two Ankole Bible School courses that Shane taught in May, and a few from the annual Ankole All-Churches Meeting. Both ABS courses went very well, and we were again reminded of how much God has done to raise up servant-leaders from these churches. This gives us such encouragement, as we think about how the Lord will continue to use these men in the future! (Click on photos to see larger version.)

The Future…???

Posted by ankolemission on November 2, 2007

Scott and I (Shane) had a very good meeting with some of the Ankole church leaders last week, a meeting that may well provide a glimpse into some of the practical “how to’s” of this mission, at least for the next few years.  I’m going to try to summarize it here in this post, because I think it gives a good picture of the direction we believe God is leading…

We met with these six leaders in order to form a group of “Advisors” (“Abahabuzi”) that will, along with the missionaries, serve as a kind of “steering committee” for this movement of churches.  The two major topics of discussion for the day were:  1) Churches that are struggling and need help, and 2) Setting a “movement ministry budget” for 2008.

(1)  Struggling Churches…  We identified four churches that are having some particularly difficult struggles right now, and discussed how we could be used to strengthen and encourage them.  Scott and I were very pleased with the plan that these guys came up with:  Over the next few weeks, we will visit each of the four churches during the week, dividing up the visits with Shane or Scott driving two from the Abahabuzi group.  The purpose of these mid-week visits will be to meet with the church leaders (in most cases to work through some leadership problems) and to make house-to-house visits.  Then, on the following Sunday, two of the Abahabuzi will visit the church in order to give some teaching and encouragement to the congregation as a whole.  In fact, the four struggling churches are in two separate “clusters”, and these visits are going to be held on “Super Sundays”, or meetings of all the churches in that cluster.  (To learn more about church clusters, go to:  http://www.ankolemission.com/village-clusters.htm.)

(2)  2008 Ministry Budget…  Another big topic was the very practical issue of how the various ministries of the Ankole Mission will be funded over the next year.  (As American team members depart, their working funds go with them.  However, one of the purposes of the town building we are constructing is a source of income generation to fund the ongoing ministries of this mission.  To learn more, go to: http://www.ankolemission.com/town-building.htm.)  Here are some of the ministries that were given a high priority (and top funding) for 2008:  Ankole Bible School, Leader’s Meetings and Advisor’s Meetings, Church/Cluster Visitation, and Benevolence in the Churches/Clusters (including financial help for roofing new church buildings).

Friday’s meeting also provides a nice example of how all this works together.  The income generated from the building’s rental shops provided the funds to transport these leaders, the “Advisors”, to and from the meeting.  It will also provide the funds to pay for their Sunday visits to the struggling churches mentioned above.  And getting together with these men to discuss and pray about the future of this mission is definitely time and money well spent!  Finally, as we go with them to these villages over the next few weeks, it will be an invaluable time of working together and increasing the effectiveness of the partnership between missionaries and national leaders.  (I was going to write that this is a good “fringe benefit” of the whole plan, but as I think about it, that might be the best thing of all!)

It was a good day, and a great meeting.  We look forward to the next few weeks, to see how it all fleshes out in real life… and we look forward with great hope.  It is our prayer that we can meet together in a true partnership, and work together to do the things that will best build up this movement of churches!

A.B.S. – July 2007 (Gospel of John)

ABS-Neller2007 (Click photo for larger version.)

The Ankole church leaders were greatly blessed this week!  Dr. Ken Neller from Harding University has just wrapped up a textual course on the Gospel of John for our Ankole Bible School, and it was a HUGE success.  The 27 men who attended went back to their villages on Friday having learned a whole lot about John’s gospel… And even more importantly, they came to know Jesus more fully and intimately as a result of Dr. Neller’s teaching and testimony.   Thanks for your continued prayers for the Ankole church leaders!

Leaders Meeting – March 2007

Posted by ankolemission on March 15, 2007

Another Great Meeting with 40+ Leaders!

This week we had a great meeting with more than 40 Ankole church leaders – it’s yet another productive meeting in a series of exciting and important ones we have been having over the past few months…

Nick arranged for the Abajubi (our core group of leaders) facilitated this week’s meeting, rather than doing it himself. One item that was talked about at length was an encouraging and challenging discussion about the nature of a true servant-leader, and the kind of commitment it will take to further God’s misison here among the Ankole.

But perhaps the most exciting aspect of all this is that we have begun to see a new level of collaboration and partnership between the missionaries and the Ankole leaders, as well as between the leaders themselves! Please pray that it continues!

Thanks for your prayers for the churches… and their leaders!

Abajubi Meeting — “Fishers of Men”

Posted by ankolemission on March 1, 2007

A Great Meeting This Week…

For most of Wednesday and Thursday, Nick Fouts led a meeting of the “Abajubi” (“Fishermen” in the Runyankore language). It was the latest in a series of very important meetings that we have been having with some of our most mature, dedicated leaders among the Ankole churches. Once again, we enjoyed a GREAT meeting with these men!

Among other things, we talked about elderships, how the missionaries and Ugandan leaders can cooperate better together, and how we can help empower and equip them to be able to make good decisions for the future of this movement of churches.

Nick says, “It was a great meeting. I continue to appreciate the openness these men have to honestly discuss the current status of this work as well as a vision for the future. I am always challenged by their faith, and the strong desire they have to carry on this mission with the Lord’s help. We’re gradually learning what it means to work more effectively together with these guys, making our work much more of a real partnership between us and them — and that is exciting!”

Please keep the leaders of the Ankole churches in your prayers…
